Our Personal Approach

At SleepWise, we investigate whether underlying conditions like obstructive sleep apnoea might be contributing to your sleep disturbances and offer a tailored treatment plan that suits you.

Our process begins with a face-to-face clinical consult followed by a convenient home sleep test to identify potential health issues linked to snoring. Following this, we analyse the sleep test results and discuss the most effective treatment options based on your specific needs and
medical history.

Treatment

01

Assessment

Sleep assessment

At a half-hour consultation, our qualified clinicians will discuss the issues you, and your whanau, are experiencing.

You then take home a sleep monitor which provides comprehensive diagnostic testing to identify sleep apnoea and its severity. The Apnoea-link home-based level 3 sleep study records snoring, types of stop-breathing events,  oxygen levels, heart rate & body position. This provides lots of detail to help identify your best treatment solutions.

Treatment

Treatment options might include

  • A referral to an ENT surgeon can be an option

  • Weight management always helps but often the sleep apnoea needs to be treated first.

  • Nasal EPAP. We stock a range of products that may be effective.

  • CPAP (Positive Airway Pressure) therapy. This is the ‘gold standard’ treatment for sleep apnoea and really does work.  CPAP involves using a small, quiet machine with a mask that creates a splinting of positive air pressure, keeping the airway open. You will be able to breathe easily and sleep more soundly. Any daytime sleepiness goes quickly, and people wake feeling refreshed with better energy and alertness.  CPAP is a treatment that works for any level of severity and will stop snoring. It is
something you can try out before you commit to a purchase.

  • There are many mask options available that you can try out with the 2-week trial at a cost of $180.

Long-term Therapy and Support

CPAP therapy is a long-term therapy that can be challenging to adhere to.

A comfortable mask and good-quality equipment is key to being able to continue with therapy. Sleepwise offers extra support for people to help them get the most out of therapy.

A full range of masks and CPAP products are in stock with Sleepwise being a ResMed preferred supplier who are known to produce great fitting masks. There are many mask options, and we are happy to arrange a mask fitting so you can decide on a mask that suits you.

Support and rental packages are available (short or long-term) and we may be able to access disability allowance support for those on a limited income.

SleepWise provides ongoing monitoring, annual data check, and review as needed.

NZTA driver compliance checks also available for professional drivers.

What Causes Snoring?

Snoring occurs when the muscles in your throat relax during sleep, narrowing your airway. As you breathe in, air vibrates these relaxed tissues, creating the familiar snoring sound. This noise can range from a gentle rumble to a loud, disruptive disturbance. Importantly, these vibrations can also disrupt your sleep, triggering a stress response when your body should be resting and recovering.

Benefit of treatment

Snoring is more than just a nuisance; it can significantly impact your life and relationships. Imagine waking up refreshed and energized every day, free from daytime fatigue and irritability. That's the power of quality sleep. Snoring can disrupt your sleep, leaving you feeling tired, moody, and unable to focus. It can be affecting your relationships as it interferes with your partner's sleep.

Snoring is a common symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea, a serious condition that can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. By addressing snoring, you're not only improving your sleep but also taking proactive steps towards better overall health.

Are you ready to reclaim your nights and experience the transformative benefits of restful sleep?

Sleep Apnoea

Sleep Apnoea

The Impact of Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea disrupts sleep in a vicious cycle. When breathing stops during an apnoea, the body is forced from deep, restorative sleep into a lighter stage to reopen the airway. This constant interruption prevents the brain from experiencing the deep sleep it needs to recharge. Consequently, people often experience excessive daytime sleepiness from such sleep fragmentation.

Even before full-blown apnoea occurs, the vibrations of snoring can trigger a stress response. The body perceives these vibrations as a potential choking hazard, releasing stress hormones that increase heart rate and blood pressure. This heightened state affects sleep quality and contributes to daytime fatigue.

Other issues that develop due to sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea is associated with:

  • Increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes due to spikes in blood pressure and heart rate during apnoeic events.

  • Weight gain caused by disrupted sleep, increased appetite, and decreased energy levels.

  • Frequent night-time urination due to sleep disturbances affecting hormone production.

  • Morning headaches due to low oxygen levels.

  • Greater risk of workplace and driving accidents due to sleepiness & poor levels of alertness.

This is a common condition (10-30%) of the population, however most people are undiagnosed and may be unaware there is a problem.
